Promoting and supporting
business in Lackawaxen Township
Lackawaxen is a virtual paradise
for those enjoying nature and points of historical interest.
The Roebling Aqueduct is the oldest
suspension bridge in the country and forerunner of Roebling's better known
work, the Brooklyn
Bridge. It was built in 1848 to
carry coal barges over the
Delaware River but is now open to car traffic.
Exhibits on the top walkway and in the tollhouse museum explain more.
There is also a path along the river which traces part of the
D&H Canal. Zane
Grey penned Riders of the
Purple Sage here. Believe it or not, he was the biggest-selling author
after the Bible and McGuffy's Readers. His home is
maintained by the National Park Service with tours
seasonally. The fishing here is legendary. Brook,
rainbow, brown trout, smallmouth bass, and shad are the favorites. The
Lackawaxen is well-stocked annually. Canoeing, or
even driving, through the unspoiled scenery is an escape in itself.
Pennsylvania Bike Route Y starts here and
continues for 300 miles to Lake Erie.
Bald eagles, drawn by the clean,
clear rivers, are a common site. More come from
Canada
December to March. The Eagle
Institute is here at that time too. Wintertime also brings out skiers to Ski Big Bear, a full service ski
area complete with snow-making, ski
school, and lodge.

But there's more . . .
There is something warmly familiar about
Lackawaxen, a real place with real people. Not too hick, not too hip. Just
a friendly place where nature and wildlife are the reasons people stay.
This is the stuff of country songs . . . rivers, trains, country roads,
and people.
At Anglers Roost & Hunters Rest,
Dimitri Zaimes, has been coming to this area since Dimitri was a
kid. He's been fishing the
Delaware and
Lackawaxen
Rivers for over 40 years and
can help you get to know the rivers too. If you've never tried fly
fishing, he can show you casting basics, so anyone willing to learn
can. His store is a place to swap stories as well as pick up any
equipment you'll need for
hunting or fishing. There's a gift shop too. Dimitri Zaimes also operates Two River Junction for river
trips. Canoeing or tubing down the pristine
Delaware is one popular
option, but rafting the
Lackawaxen
River during a water release
(usually midweek) could be the area's best kept secret.
At Roebling Inn on the Delaware, DJ
& JoAnn Jahn have been welcoming guests for almost 21 years. They
converted an 1870 canal building into a first class bed & breakfast
featured in many articles. JoAnn has decorated the guestrooms to convey
the warmth of history you would expect, and further equipped them with
modern amenities you might not expect--private baths, tv, a/c, and
wireless internet access. Some rooms have fireplaces. DJ has been in the
restaurant business since the age of 12 and it really shows when he makes
breakfast! No one goes hungry. Sue & Dave Holbert at The Inn at Lackawaxen deserve a
gold medal for bringing a 150 year old building back from the brink of
despair. They poured their heart and soul (and lots of cement) into
transforming it into a beautiful restaurant with lodging too. Dining out
on the deck facing the
Delaware and
Roebling
Bridge is heaven. And when the
need arises, you couldn't ask for a nicer wedding location. Incidentally,
the Holberts were a founding family of Lackawaxen, over 200 years ago.
